Anterior cruciate ligament injuries affect over 100,000 patients annually in the U.S., yet fixation failure remains a major challenge. In collaboration with UltraFix Inc., this project introduces a swelling copolymeric suture anchor that expands upon fluid absorption to create radial pressure for secure fixation without damaging bone. Engineered porosity promotes bone ingrowth and remodeling, ensuring long-term stability. Unlike conventional screws or suspensory systems, this dual-action anchor combines immediate mechanical strength with progressive biological integration. The technology promises superior fixation in poor bone quality and resists bone damage, screw and anchor pullout, and tunnel widening, reducing revision rates and healthcare costs. UltraFix contributes expertise in polymer processing and device prototyping, while Drexel University provides advanced computational modeling and biomechanics capabilities. The project will deliver optimized prototypes, validated design tools, and mechanical testing data to accelerate commercialization. This collaboration strengthens Pennsylvania’s leadership in orthopedic device manufacturing, reduces healthcare costs, and creates workforce training opportunities in biomechanics, advanced materials, and implant design.
