After exercising, athletes continuously stimulate and condition their muscles through light-to-moderate compressions in massage-like patterns to robustly circulate oxygen and nutrients necessary for muscle repair mechanisms underlying recovery. The PIs from Villanova University developed a novel wearable technology and licensed it to Square Root Brands LLC., a technology which provides passive compressions induced by the wearer’s muscle contractions, emulating light to moderate massage.

In this proposal, we will perform extensive prototype testing with professional athletes. We will statistically analyze the resulting performance metrics, e.g., strength gain and muscle recovery from an activity. We will establish a test-design loop to optimize the produce design and manufacturing process. Hence, we will develop an innovative wearable technology for enhancing the conditioning and recovery of athletes. While this technology is primarily tailored for the athletic community, other segments of the population, such as stroke survivors, stand to benefit from it as well.
